It could just be that my GPU is bad.įrom a very nice article on : I could be wrong about the conclusion because I really don't know how this is supposed to work - just assumptions from what I've read. T he Nvidia is apparently the one used during boot time and the reason for the blank screen until an event that forces the logic to use the Intel. I assume that both should show up from reading articles from google searches. When in the error mode I believe that my Nvidia GPU has gone missing because it doesn't show up in a System Report under Displays - only the Intel HD Graphics 4000 is listed. BTW, I was also able to get the screen back by connecting to the macbook using JumpDesktop from my iPad and then putting the screen to sleep - nice when there is no external monitor available.Īfter a few days of intermittent issues with the black screen, troubleshooting with Apple on the phone and at the genius bar, the issue went solid. Getting the screen back allowed me to find the root cause. Thanks for posting the workaround, nvpham. The only thing I have left is reintalling Mavericks OS X, which yo be honest I'm afraid I will get stuck because of the black screen. Naturaly the machine is out of warranty and if its a faulty GPU which means replacing the logic board which means replacing pretty much everything. Try from Guest Account (discard a user-program related problem).Boot to Recovery Mode (which stays on black screen).Boot to Safe Mode (which stays on black screen).Remove the adapter and open de lip again, woala! now screen displays properly and stays working as long as you dont shutdown/restart. If I close the lid, plug-in my miniDisplayPort-VGA adapter, like if you wanted to use only external monitor.

So far it would point to a faulty GPU, but here comes the strange part. Also every time I boot I get a Black Screen, but you can hear the chime from booting. I have been having an issue with my retina MacBook Pro (Mid-2012) where I can't get video output to work (HDMI, miniDisplayPort-VGA).
